A Personal Message from Darren
My name is Darren and I am the founder of Colchester Wado Ryu Karate. I hold a significant dan rank and have studied martial arts for more than forty years and have spent the last thirty five teaching here in Colchester. Karate transformed my life when I needed it most. It helped me build resilience, direction and inner strength during some very difficult years.
Everything I teach today is shaped by that journey. I understand what it feels like to lack confidence. I understand how to help a child find their voice. I understand how powerful it is when someone finally believes they are capable.
This is why CWRK exists. Not just to teach techniques, but to help people grow into stronger, calmer and more confident versions of themselves.

Before running CWRK full time, I worked for more than thirty years in healthcare, behaviour support and domestic abuse services across Essex. I supported children, teenagers and adults through anxiety, trauma and emotional regulation difficulties.
This experience shapes the calm and reassuring environment we create. Students feel safe. Parents feel understood. Families feel supported.
As a school, we teach Wado Ryu, one of the principal traditional karate styles recognised worldwide.

CWRK is run by my family. My son Brandon, a 5th Dan Black Belt, teaches beside me. My wife Sharon supports every part of the school behind the scenes.
