Choosing a martial arts school is personal. You want skilled teaching, a welcoming atmosphere and a clear sense of how your child, or you, will be supported. Here is how we teach, who we welcome and what to expect.

Karate gives movement a purpose: listening, taking turns, practising technique and working towards a goal. We set clear boundaries while seeing each child as an individual.
We teach awareness, boundaries, avoiding conflict, getting help and proportionate self-defence skills. Students learn when and why a technique is appropriate.
You do not need to get fit before starting. We work from your starting point and build skill, mobility and stamina over time. Returners are welcome too.
Tell us what helps your child feel comfortable, including sensory, communication or additional support needs. We can discuss adjustments before a taster and be honest about what our setting can provide.
Our mixed-age classes give families a shared activity and a chance to encourage one another. The challenge is adapted to each person's age and experience.
All groups welcome beginners and students with previous experience. We teach traditional Wado Ryu karate with age-appropriate instruction.
Clear, manageable steps help children develop coordination, listening, confidence and the basics of karate.
Students develop technique, self-control and persistence while learning to work responsibly with partners.
Teenagers and adults develop karate skills, fitness and composure in a supportive group with appropriate challenge.
Children and adults can train together. Ask us which session suits your family's ages and experience.
A separate parent-and-child programme based on movement, play and early confidence, with one participating adult per child. Discover Panda Tots.
Ask about Sport for Confidence and an individual discovery conversation. We discuss suitability and accessibility openly before enrolment.
Expect a welcome, warm-up, focused technical practice and a chance to apply what you have learned. Depending on the group and lesson, training may include basic techniques, kata, partner work and controlled drills. We set a standard of respect and explain the purpose behind what we teach.
We notice progress beyond belts: the student who speaks up for the first time, keeps trying after a difficult lesson or learns to pause before reacting. These are meaningful steps, although no school can promise a particular result for every person.
Parents can tell us about a child's worries and what tends to help. Adults can tell us about injuries or concerns. We will discuss sensible adjustments and whether the class is a good fit.
I’m Darren Reynolds, founder and Head Instructor. I have practised martial arts for more than 40 years, taught for more than 35 years and hold a 7th Dan black belt. Wado Ryu remains a lifelong practice for me, and I care as much about how someone learns as what they learn.
My son Brandon, a 5th Dan black belt, helps teach. My wife Sharon helps run the school. We have kept the close, family feel that students have known for years while developing a clearer pathway for newcomers and experienced members.
My background includes work in healthcare, behaviour support and domestic abuse services. That experience informs the way I listen and teach. Karate can support personal growth, but it is not a substitute for clinical or specialist care.
We teach a rotating curriculum with regular feedback and progressive belt goals. A beginner can start with Kickstart, then move through Foundation, Elevation, Masters, Elite and beyond as their skill develops. Progress depends on readiness and consistent practice rather than simply time served.
A 12-week introduction to the basics and the first step on the belt pathway.
Build reliable technique, understanding and confidence through the coloured belts.
Deeper study, black belt development and optional leadership and instructor pathways.
Junior students have additional small milestones. We will explain the current syllabus and assessment expectations.
We want families to understand the options before joining. The 12-week Kickstart programme is £249 upfront for access to up to two classes per week. After that, programme enrolment and monthly fees depend on the pathway and class access selected. Our Core, Momentum and Velocity monthly access tiers are £55 for up to two classes, £70 for up to three, and £80 for four or more classes per week. Some programmes have separate enrolment fees and inclusions, so ask for the current written breakdown for your stage.
We also offer a Basic class-only option with different inclusions and separately paid gradings. For families with three or more members, ask about our family fee arrangement. We explain terms, what is included, cancellation notice and grading costs before you commit.
Ask about the right optionA good decision starts with seeing the teaching for yourself. Notice how instructors speak to new students, whether the class suits your aims, how partners practise safely, and whether expectations and costs are clear. Ask your child how they felt after trying it. If you need a quieter introduction, tell us when you enquire and we can discuss a short taster or private introduction.
“You can come as you are. We will listen to what you hope to gain and help you take the first sensible step.” — Darren
No. Beginners are welcome in every age group. We explain the basics and build from there.
Partner and controlled contact activities are introduced appropriately for age, experience and readiness. Tell us about concerns so we can explain how a particular class is run.
We start with a conversation about the individual child, their strengths and useful adjustments. We will listen carefully and be candid about what we can offer.
Adult beginners and returners can start at their own level. Let us know about relevant injuries or limitations before training.
Students develop skills through regular lessons and assessments. A belt reflects demonstrated progress; it is not automatic after a fixed number of weeks.
